myWorld Social Studies – Pearson Education (Review)

This past year in our co-op we studied American History.   When we received Pearson Education’s myWorld Social Studies for Grade 5 (titled Building our Country, volume 5a), I was excited to be able to reinforce some of what we learned last year.  Little did I know that not only would it do that, it would encourage my children to want to learn more about our country’s history.

We’ve all heard the saying “don’t judge a book by its cover.”  For this review, I need to change that to “don’t judge this book by your first glance at the inside.”  When I first peeked inside, I’ll admit to being a bit surprised, and unconvinced that the book I was holding was for 5th grade.  Through our use of this book, I’ve re-discovered that a book doesn’t have to look “grade level” intense to deliver the needed material.

PRODUCT DETAILS

The program includes (excerpts from the website):

Student Worktext

Promotes active learning, supports students who are learning to read in the content-areas, and promotes active reading strategies. The Student Worktext encourages greater interaction with the content and more active reading leading to long term retention of skills and concepts. Your child will love writing, drawing, circling and underlining content as they connect, experience and understand the world of Social Studies.

Each chapter incorporates a real life story that relates to the lesson providing the basis for discussion. Lessons feature a variety of activities providing your child an opportunity to interact with the material to apply their knowledge. Checkpoints are featured throughout to ensure that your child understands of the material.

myStory Video DVD-ROM

The myStory Video DVD features engaging videos with actual students that explore the Big Question of each chapter. Video icons within the student book indicate that a corresponding video is available on this DVD. These videos allow your child to see children of his or her own age explore the Big Question and the key ideas in each chapter, to go on video field trips, and to watch a character from the chapter come to life. Through these video features, your child will make a personal connection to the lesson, building long-term understanding and knowledge.

Teacher’s Resource Library DVD-ROM

The Teacher Resource Library is a one-stop resource for the myWorld Social Studies Teacher’s Guide, lesson plans, and instruction resources. Each chapter will provide:

  • A Teacher’s Guide for each chapter
  • Lesson plans
  • An audio podcast on chapter subjects
  • Hands-on activities to engage your child
  • Editable tests for each chapter and separate answer keys

These carefully planned resources will guide you with planning, supporting activities, and testing to ensure learning is personalized to fit your child.

This curriculum (both volumes) is available HERE for $69.99.

We received the first semester of the curriculum, Volume 5A, for purposes of this review.

WHAT I LIKE

The intro to the book touches on reading and writing skills, then gives great summary information on our country, including maps (and how to read them), the economy, jobs, and an excellent overview of our government.

The myStory DVD – think mini field trips on a DVD!

The teacher resource DVD – it includes teacher helps, activities connected to the lessons to help reinforce the lesson, podcasts for the teacher about the lesson – and much more!  I especially love the editable resources.

A study guide and review and assessment are included at the end of each chapter – it includes a list of key points for each lesson in that chapter, review questions of reach chapter, and a short writing exercise.

The appendices (even though they’re not called that)!  The text of the Declaration of Independence (including a list of the signers) and the U.S. Constitution (including the 27 amendents) is given, along with explanatory notes and questions for thought and application.  Political and physical maps of the U.S. and select countries are also included, along with a glossary for reference.

I WISH…

I wish we could go on all the field trips shown on the DVD!

WATCH OUT FOR

As I said earlier, don’t judge the content of this book by its appearance.  I thought it looked a bit “young” for 5th grade, but have been impressed by the content.

Don’t let the “textbook feel” fool you – for the most part we’re “allergic” to textbooks around here, but my girls still really enjoyed this.

The book refers to additional online resources.  Those are not available in the homeschool package in order to reduce the price to make it more affordable for homeschoolers.  Note the online activities are extra, and not necessary to make good use of the curriculum.

Unfortunately, I’ve found a couple instances where the answer key is incorrect.  However, since so far we’ve done this together, I’ve been familiar enough with the text and the correct answer for it not to be a big deal.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I’m re-evaluating a couple of things this summer, so I’m putting this in the undecided column.  We enjoyed it so much, though, I’m leaning toward continuing and letting the girls work independently and use the DVD and the worktext as a supplement.

Mathematical Reasoning Level F by Critical Thinking Co. (TOS Review)

    ctlogo

Teaching critical thinking sounds kind of intimidating, doesn’t it?  Take heart – The Critical Thinking Co. makes it  fun and easy!  So far we have loved everything we’ve ever purchased from this company (admittedly we haven’t done enough of this, but it’s on my list this year to remedy that), so I was elated to learn we’d be reviewing their new Mathematical Reasoning Level F!  I intended to use it with my 6th grader who is a little behind on math, but when I told her, her response was “but I like doing math with ___________” (insert our current curriculum in the blank).  Far be it from me to take her away from her enjoyment of a math program, so I decided to let my 4th grader give it a try (and she was thrilled!).

    PRODUCT DETAILS

One of The Critical Thinking Company’s core curriculum products for math, this huge, gorgeous book includes student content and answer guide and provides a complete year’s math curriculum (but can also be used simply as a supplement).  The book, written by Carolyn Anderson, is targeted to 5th graders, but can also be used with younger or older students, depending on their math proficiency.

Normally priced at $42.99, as of the date of this post it’s on sale for $37.99!

This is a gorgeous book, inside and out – visually appealing and colorful,  it makes getting kids interested in the book simple.  May I repeat – simple

    orderofoperation average riddle

This book is written to the following standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics:

    • Number and Operations
    • Algebra
    • Geometry
    • Measurement
    • Data Analysis and Probability

It covers a wide variety of topics – again, a full year’s curriculum:

    • Analyze
    • Angle
    • Area
    • Calendar
    • Capacity - customary, metric
    • Concept - addition, subtraction, multiplication, division
    • Congruence
    • Coordinate System
    • Count
    • Critical Thinking
    • Data Analysis - bar graph, line graph, survey, table, picture
    • Data Collection
    • Decimals - concept, add, subtract, multiple, divide
    • Draw - parallel, perpendicular, by definition
    • Equations Expression, Vocabulary
    • Equivalence
    • Estimation - addition, subtraction, multiplication, division
    • Exponents
    • Factors
    • Fractions - form/vocabulary, add, subtract, multiply, divide
    • Graph, Table, Chart, Figure - analyze, represent
    • Inequalities
    • Length - customary, metric
    • Likelihood, Probability
    • Mean, Median, Mode
    • Money - add, subtract, multiply, divide
    • Multiple
    • Negative Numbers
    • Order
    • Order of Operations
    • Patterns - geometric, numeric
    • Percent
    • Perimeter
    • Place Value - expanded notation, number form, word form
    • Polygon
    • Prime/Composite
    • Properties
    • Reflection, Translation, Rotation
    • Rounding
    • Shapes - 2D, 3D
    • Signed Numbers
    • Symmetry
    • Temperature - customary, metric
    • Time
    • Variable as Unknown - in addition, in subtraction, in multiplication, in division
    • Volume
    • Weight - customary, metric
    • Whole Numbers - addition, subtraction, multiplication, division
    • Word Problems

Wow – what a list!  Since Hannah is only 4th grade, she needed extra help with some of the topics, but overall I thought she did great.

Using the spiral method, it is, of course, meant to be done in page order – no skipping around!

    WHAT I LIKE

It’s a workbook, but it’s such high quality that it doesn’t seem like a workbook.

The books are reproducible for use within your family, so you could use this with each of your children.  My girls, however, want their own books like this, and I’ll admit that a copy of this wouldn’t seem nearly as neat as an original (at least not to my girls).  To get them to willingly do this program, it’s worth having to buy two copies!  Read the Use of Copyrighted Materials Policy.

No lesson prep for me!  Literally, you just pick it up and begin.

The company claims that using these books will increase standardized test scores – and I believe it!

My 4th grader loves puzzles and riddles – so she enjoyed those pages (after she encountered the first, it was hard to keep her from going through and finding the rest) – but it was motivation to work through the other pages to get to the next puzzle!

    WATCH OUT FOR

It truly is a spiral approach – meaning, if you’re used to a master approach, the jumping around with topics might seem odd at first.

Depending on the student’s math proficiency, you may want to sit with him/her as he’s doing the work.

    BE SURE TO

If you’re not familiar with The Critical Thinking Co., you must (must!) go check them out.  They offer products (both core and supplementary) for reasoning/problem solving, math, science, and language arts.  And if you’re interested in this particular product, the levels start at Mathematical Reasoning Level 1 & 2 (for preschool) and go through this level, with more (I believe) to come!

    FINAL THOUGHTS

Hannah really liked this but, despite how thorough it is, I’m undecided whether I’d be comfortable having it as my only math curriculum.  I will probably use it as a supplement, though, as any extra math practice is great, especially when there’s not a war involved to get the girls to do it!

God’s GREAT Covenant, New Testament 1 (TOS Review)

I love all things Classical Academic Press.  Everything I’ve seen from them is top-notch.   So, when I was chosen to review God’s GREAT Covenant, New Testament 1: A Bible Course for Children, I was beyond excited.   Given the great quality of their other products, I expected this one to also be wonderful.

    GGCNT1bundle_LRG

When the package arrived I basically ripped it open from excitement.  Inside I found two very large books – a student book,  plus a teacher’s edition.  I peeked inside the books, and almost immediately I could tell I would not be disappointed with this study.

    PRODUCT DETAILS

God’s GREAT Covenant, New Testament 1:  A Bible Course for Children is a study of the Gospels.  From the Classical Academic Press website and from the description on the back of the book (because they say it best):

In God’s Great Covenant, New Testament 1: A Bible Course for Children, students will follow the story of Jesus, the Messiah and King, as He is born and fulfills all God’s promises. But Jesus does not arrive as people expected. The people were looking for a mighty warrior to deliver them from the oppressive Roman government. Instead, He came as the suffering Savior, who would die as the sacrifice for sin and death. He was building a kingdom that was not of this world—it was the kingdom of God. He is the Son of Man, God’s Servant, the Messiah, and the Son of God. Each of the four units in this text emphasizes one of these names of Jesus. God’s Great Covenant, New Testament 1 teaches the Gospels to students in fourth grade and up, using stories, worksheets, memory verses, devotional guides, quizzes, and a little boy named Simon. In the introductions to the text, students will also learn about the historical, cultural, and geographical setting of the New Testament. This book is a most comprehensive and heartfelt study of the Gospels, and many parents and teachers will find themselves learning along with their students.

Written by Claire A. Larsen and written for 4th grade and up, this study consists of four units, with nine chapters (eight new lessons and one review lesson).  At one lesson a week this would constitute a full year’s Bible curriculum (assuming you don’t homeschool year-round).  The books and set of audios can be purchased individually or as a set:

    Student book - $26.95
    Teacher’s edition - $29.95
    Mp3 audio files - $9.95
Set of both books plus audio files - $56.95

    The units are:

Unit I:  Jesus, the Son of Man, Has Come…To Live Among His People
Unit II;  Jesus, God’s Servant, Has Come…To Proclaim the Good News
Unit III: Jesus, The Messiah, Has Come…To Teach About God’s Kingdom
Unit IV:  Jesus, the Son of God, Has Come…To Conquer Sin and Death

Before delving into the units, you’re provided much introductory information:

    Basic introduction
    Historical and Political Introduction
    Chronological Introduction
    Geographical Introduction
    Religious Introduction

In addition, there is a “Daily Life Introduction: Welcome to Simon’s World”.  Simon is a fictional kid who lives in the village of Jareh, and serves as a sort of tour guide through the study.

Each chapter begins by giving a theme, scripture passages, a memory passage, and key facts .  The lesson, referred to as Story Time, follows (can be read or listened to on the audio), and the chapter ends with review worksheets.  The last lesson in each unit is itself a review unit containing more review worksheets, a memory passage worksheet (more than just memory work here – a true examination of the passage and its meaning), a devotional guide and, of course, the Simon’s World story.

    Appendices/extras follow the last lesson:

    Appendix A – Fulfillment of Prophesies/Covenant Pictures/Sabbath Principles
Appendix B – Jesus as Prophet, Priest, and King
Appendix C – The Lord’s Prayer (not just the prayer itself, but an examination of its meaning)
    Glossary
    Quizzes for each chapter!
More maps (maps are also sprinkled throughout the lessons)

A quick note about the Teacher’s Edition – it’s fabulous!  It’s a complete copy of the student book - the student pages are shrunk to provide room for notes and teacher helps.  Answers to the questions in the lessons are provided, along with answers to the quizzes in the back.

    WHAT I LIKE

Everything.  Seriously.  My search for a complete Bible study for my girls is over.

This study is meaty – it is not a watered-down kids’ Bible study.  I want my girls to hide Scripture in their heart, not simplified stories - so this is perfect.

The girls loved Simon’s World!  I think somehow they related more to his “kid’s view”

The books are beautiful, almost begging to be opened.  Although done in black/white text (with plenty of graphics and pictures), the books are visually appealing – you can tell that a lot of time was spent in the design of layout.  It’s something the girls enjoy using.

I have been learning new things with this study.  We are going fairly slow because, honestly, I don’t want any of us to miss anything!

I’m a chart person – I love the ease of looking at charts.  This study is filled with them, which makes comparisons and learning new facts easy.

    I WISH…

We sort of plodded through the introductory material.   While we learned a lot, I wish this also could be included in the audio files, as I’d honestly like to review it again.

    WATCH OUT FOR

Don’t put this in the “homeschool curriculum” category.  While this study is right up a homeschooling parent’s alley, it is a fabulous study for all children.

As I said, this is meaty stuff.  I believe my girls are getting more out of it because we’re doing it together.  I suppose you could have students do it independently, but this study is so great I’m not real sure why you’d want to.

Don’t overlook the quizzes in the back of the book – there’s one for each chapter!

I would be sure to purchase the Teacher’s Edition, not just the student book  - there’s a wealth of information in the Teacher’s Edition!

    FINAL THOUGHTS

This is a thorough study for children of part of the New Testament.  Highly recommend it for all children, not just those who are homeschooled.  It is my intention, when we finish this study, to purchase NT 2; and then we’ll go back and also do both OT volumes.

    Write with WORLD (TOS Review)

Often I think I should have become a dentist, because at times it’s like pulling teeth to get my girls to write.   We haven’t been doing a formal writing program for very long, so maybe this is just a stage to be expected.  Both my girls are resistant, one moreso than the other.  Our current writing program is a great one, but I keep hoping for that magic program to come along that will  make writing fun or them.  When I was chosen to review Write with WORLD, I waited with great anticipation for it to arrive – would this be the “just right” thing to encourage the girls in their writing?

    PRODUCT DETAILS

Write with WORLD is a new middle school writing program being produced by the publishers of God’s World News and World Magazine.   A two-year program geared toward grades 6-9, Write with WORLD is still in the pilot stage.  The program appears to be fairly easily adjustable for younger/older children.

For this review,  I received the Student Book and the Parent/Teacher Book (each containing 200+ pages) for the first year.

Final versions of the curriculum are due to begin shipping in the summer of 2012.  Purchased separately, each year will cost $95; both years can be purchased together for $165.  This price includes access to a user website which will provide opportunities for being published online as well as additional writing subjects.  Order HERE.

This first year of the curriculum is broken down into four units of four lessons each.

    Unit 1
Lesson 1 Reading Images and Advertisements
       Lesson 2 Comparative Reading: Sentences
Lesson 3 Comparative and Critical Reading: Paragraphs
Lesson 4 Developing Critical Readers: Essays
    Unit 2
       Lesson 1 The Paragraph
Lesson 2 Composing and Linking Sentences
Lesson 3 Creating Focus and Arrangement
Lesson 4 Linking Paragraphs: Transitions and Logic
    Unit 3
Lesson 1 Writing Autobiography: Reporting Facts
Lesson 2 Writing Autobiography: Creating Character
Lesson 3 Writing Autobiography: Developing Ideas
       Lesson 4 Writing Autobiography: Composition
    Unit 4
Lesson 1 Crafting Narratives: Developing a Point of View
Lesson 2 Crafting Narratives: Showing Versus Telling
Lesson 3 Crafting Narratives: Narrative With a Purpose
Lesson 4 Crafting Narratives: Writing a Fictional Narrative

Each of those lessons is further broken down into “capsules”.  For instance, Unit 1, Lesson 1,  is broken down into:

Capsule 1 – The Story Behind the Image
       Capsule 2 – What a Photojournalist Sees
Capsule 3 – The Story Behind the Image (uses a different picture than Capsule 1)
Capsule 4 – The Message Behind the Advertisement
Capsule 5 – Style, Diction, and Revision

This additional break-down gives the child bite-sized pieces – a reluctant writer is somewhat able to ease into the process.  You can view Lesson 1 HERE.

The Parent/Teacher Book is basically a copy of the Student Book, but includes teaching suggestions/notes, plus a four-page overview at the beginning of each unit which includes a general overview of the purpose of the unit, plus a lesson-by-lesson detailed overview.  You can read the General Introduction to the Parent/Teacher Manual HEREpay particular attention to the section titled “Distinctives.”

    WHAT I LIKE

I love this quote from the website, which sums up the underlying purpose of this new curriculum:

Christians in particular should try to be the best communicators. They possess the truth and need to articulate a biblical worldview.

We have used pictures to write stories in our other curriculum, but never went into a “behind the scenes” review of what the picture really stands for.  The first lesson in the book covers images – and that first lesson hooked my girls right from the get-go.

    Love the lesson overviews.

We found it very easy to stop and start – meaning if we didn’t get all the way through a capsule or lesson, it was easy to do part and finish the rest later.

Love that the curriculum also works on grammar.  Also love the journaling,  grammar exercises, and vocabulary work included in each capsule.

I love the point of view that the publishers have in developing this curriculum.  From the introduction to the Parent/Teacher Manual:

Write with WORLD will train students to look for "worldview clues" in writing so that they become discerning readers. The curriculum also aims to help them discover their own voice as writers with a worldview of their own which they know how to articulate. We want students to learn to join the thinkers and writers of our day, with, in the words of the Apostle Paul, "conversation . . . full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that [they] may know how to answer everyone" (Colossians 4:6).

    WATCH OUT FOR

Note that because the Parent/Teacher manual is a copy of the student manual with teaching suggestions added in the margins for most pages, it is several inches wider than the student manual.  We didn’t find this bothersome, but just wanted to make you aware.

The curriculum is loosely tied to the two magazines (God’s World News and World Magazine), but it is not necessary to have these magazines in order to use the curriculum.

    BE SURE TO

Be heard!  The publisher is gauging interest in having the curriculum available in electronic format rather than printed books.  An electronic version would allow for use on not only your home computer, but also on e-readers.  They are also trying to determine interest in a high school curriculum.  Please give the publisher your thoughts at edufeedback@gwpub.com.

View the TABLE OF COMMENTS for both Year 1 and Year 2.

    FINAL THOUGHTS

The girls really enjoyed using this curriculum.  While they didn’t ask to use it, they certainly weren’t resistant – and once we got going they truly seemed to enjoy it.  !

Progeny Press – Across Five Aprils (TOS Review)

Months ago, we visited a Civil War museum with our co-op.  I watched with awe as Hannah’s hand flew up to answer a question posed by the museum curator.  Subsequent questions caused  her hand to raise more cautiously to give others a chance to answer.  As no other hands appeared, she would give a lengthy and eloquent answer – answers to questions on topics we had not studied in depth.  Suddenly it dawned on me – my science-obsessed daughter also had developed a keen interest in the Civil War simply from  reading the history books on our shelves.  I made a mental note to add additional Civil War information to our studies.

When we were given the chance to review a literature study guide from Progeny Press, I took that opportunity to choose a guide focused on the Civil War – Across Five Aprils.

Progeny Press publishes study guides for literature for grades kindergarten through high school.  Their catalog features over 100 study guides, which will help your student focus on critical thinking, comprehension, literary analysis, and Christian application.  You can search the study guides by genre HERE, or search by grade level HERE.

    PRODUCT DETAILS

I requested and received the Across Five Aprils Study Guide in the PDF format, which included the study guide (interactive, so the students can fill in the answers on the computer), the answer key, and a “ReadMe” file which contains information and instructions for working with the interactive guide (for both Windows and Max users).  The study guide is available in several different forms at varying prices:

    Printed, paperbound booklet - $18.99
CD (with interactive PDF) - $16.99
    CD plus booklet - $23.99
    interactive PDF by e-mail - $16.99
    CD (with non-interactive PDF) - $12.75

See your various purchase  options HERE and HERE.

The study guide for Across Five Aprils is 64-pages and targeted to grades 5 through 9,  and is set in the U.S. in the 1860’s during the Civil War.   We had previously read through the book, but read it again for this study.  The study guide added so much more!

    So how does it work?

The guide begins with introductory topics:  a brief biography of the author of the study guide and info on the members of the peer review panel; the table of contents (which I thought was odd placement as it referred to the prior two sections); a note  to the instructor, a synopsis of the story, and information about the book’s author; and background information on the Civil War and suggested activities to do to enhance your experience in reading the book (both before reading and while reading).

Following (beginning on page 14 of the study guide) were six lessons, each covering two chapters of the book.  Each lesson is set up in a similar fashion:  vocabulary, comprehension exercises, what I like to call “thinking” questions (about themes, events, characters, the use of language and literary elements, etc.), a “dig deeper” section, and writing suggestions.

Next was an overview section which discussed, among other things, conflict, plot,  climax and resolution, all things we have studied in our writing course this year.  Next was a section for essay and writing suggestions.

The study guide concludes with a list of suggested additional resources (books, 2 websites, and a PBS movie).

To get the most out of the study guide, your student should have access to a Bible, a dictionary, a thesaurus, and sometimes a concordance.  According to Progeny Press, the student should complete one section of the study guide per week.

You can read the authors’ suggestions on how to use the guide HERE.

    WHAT I LIKE

Love that the girls can simply type in their answers on the computer on the PDF version.

I love when I’m given a list of additional resources.  Invariably there are other “rabbit trails” on a topic that we want to chase, and guidance on potential resources is always appreciated!

I like that each study guide is reviewed by a peer review panel.

I love that the girls can do this somewhat independently, although I’d prefer to always do it with them  - you’re never too old to think and learn!  My girls’ enthusiasm for learning more about the Civil War has rubbed off on me.

Sprinkled throughout the guide are things that I’d characterize as a review of grammar/writing/literary elements – discussions/definitions of idioms, synonyms, personification, metaphor, etc.  I think reading about these things and seeing how they’re used adds a lot to the learning experience, helping the student use them in their own writing.

I love the different ways the guide introduces vocabulary: writing definitions, multiple choice, matching, etc.   Learning vocabulary is more interested when the method varies.

    I WISH…

I wish there were lists of suggestions for younger/older “tag-along”children – a way to lower the level  a bit for younger students yet keep them learning, and a way to heighten the requirements a bit for older kids.  I don’t think this particular study would need any increased requirements for older kids since we found some of the assignments to be way more than we were ready for, but I think a younger student could benefit from a couple “lower” level suggestions.  That’s something that can be done by the parent fairly easy, but our family stays extremely busy so I always appreciate all the help/guidance I can get!

    WATCH OUT FOR

Be aware that if you want to print the completed PDF and your children have been “wordy” on their answers, the complete answer may not print.  If the inserted text exceeds the length of the text box given, the text will wrap and they’ll be able to fill in their complete answer, but when you print it there will be a plus sign at the bottom right of the text box indicating there is text that did not print.  I don’t believe this is a fault or error on the part of Progeny Press – it’s simply the nature of an interactive PDF.

Any internet sites referenced in the Additional Resources section of the guide should be double-checked before allowing your children to visit them.  While the sites referenced were checked at publication, the guide clearly states that Progeny Press can’t continually check all websites referenced (common sense, of course).  Your child’s use of the internet should be supervised while using this guide, or you could pre-check all the websites.  I did not see any websites in this guide that caused me concern, but I double-checked them anyway.

While Progeny Press suggests one lesson per week, I found that was a bit too accelerated for my liking.   I wanted more time for the girls to really discuss and think about the story.  The one lesson per week is just a suggestion – do what works best for your family.

I found many of the writing suggestions in the Essay/Writing suggestions section to be slightly too difficult for my 4th and 6th grade girls (the oldest struggles a bit with writing, and the youngest is a grade below the suggested grades for this guide), so we discussed them instead.  That worked much better for us, and still accomplished the purpose of getting them to think about the story.

There are some references to “class”,  as these study guides can also be used in a classroom  setting.  As a homeschooler, I simply modify the suggested activity (if necessary) to fit our family.

    Beeyoutiful (TOS Review)

The box of review products arrived addressed, as usual, to me.  The difference this time was that the box contained natural, pampering products for me from Beeyoutiful.  Exciting!  When I opened the box I found two products to enjoy – the Milk & Honey Facial Bar and B.A.L.M. Lip Moisturizer.

    PRODUCT DETAILS

    B.A.L.M. Lip Moisturizer

Lip balm has been around for ages – but have you ever really read the ingredient list for many of the brands?  It’s actually kind of scary.  Compare it to the ingredient list for Beeyoutiful’s B.A.L.M. Lip Moisturizer:  grapeseed oil (organic!), shea butter (organic!), beeswax and essential oils.  The essential oils (orange or peppermint) are what gives the B.A.L.M. Lip Moisturizer its flavor.  I received the peppermint version to review.

I love this lip balm.  The peppermint oil gives it a wonderful taste and smell (I’ll admit to smelling it every time I opened it before I applied it to my lips), and provides a nice tingle when  applied.  I’ve kept it by my bed and applied it nightly since I received it, and my lips are in great shape!

It’s nice to know that rather than applying chemicals, with this lip balm I’m applying ingredients that are good for my lips – ones that are meant to nourish and heal.  This is definitely a product that I will purchase more of, and I can’t wait to also try the orange flavor!

The lip balm comes in twist-up tubes weighing of 0.15 ounces.  They are available for $3.00 each HERE.  This is a bargain – have you checked prices for “natural” lip balms lately?  The orange flavor also has a notation that if you buy 3 or more the price drops to $2.70 each, but the peppermint has no such note (and when I added 3 peppermints to my shopping cart to double-check, the price did not decrease).

    Milk & Honey Facial Bar

There are so many facial products these days that it’s overwhelming trying to find something that works for your skin.  The “natural” ones, including the product line that I normally use, are quite expensive.  I was excited to try Beeyoutiful’s Milk & Honey Facial Bar.

The facial bar is 4.25 oz., and comes wrapped in plastic in the adorable shape of part of a honeybee hive.  The ingredients are raw goat milk, distilled water, olive oil, coconut oil, palm oil, vitamin E oil, vegetable oil, sodium hydroxide (lye), raw honey, bee pollen, bee propolis, beeswax, sweet orange essential oil.

    image

Information on the functions of the ingredients from the website:

Two natural treasures in one bar of soap help repair sores, fight acne, soothe chapping, and balance uneven or oily skin. Bee products—honey, propolis, pollen and wax—meet goat milk to clean up the toughest skin problems you can muster.

Honey cleanses dirt and impurities while smoothing wrinkles by increasing your skin’s elasticity. Propolis—a mixture of the essential oils, pollen, and wax bees harvest from plants—nourishes dry, itchy skin. Pollen, rich in enzymes and vitamins, contains the complete family of amino acids. It promotes new skin cell growth while scrubbing away built-up dead cells without stripping the skin of its natural protection. Milk & Honey’s beeswax base is the all-natural “carrier” for other ingredients that leaves your skin feeling soft and clean.

Raw goat milk is rich in enzymes beneficial to your skin, and five natural, skin-replenishing oils balance and moisturize. This abundance of revitalizing components is topped off with a touch of sweet orange essential oil for an agreeable, bright aroma.

The facial bar sells for $10.  Discounts are available:

    • Buy 3 for $9.00 each and save 10%
    • Buy 6 for $8.50 each and save 15%
    • Buy 12 for $8.00 each and save 20%

I must say that when I unwrapped the bar the scent I was greeted with was…well, unpleasant.  I expected the scent of the sweet orange oil, and that’s nowhere near what I smelled.  I placed the bar on a saucer next to the sink and used it a couple of times over the next several days, but only on my hands (because of the scent) - after that, the smell had dissipated a bit so I was able to use it on my face.  Even after all this time, it still doesn’t smell like orange.

However, scent aside, I love this bar.  During the time I used it, I stopped using my usual (and expensive)  facial products.  To me, my face actually feels better with this soap.  My face is soft and supple, and a couple of trouble spots I’ve had for a while are now gone.   I may just give up my usual facial product line in favor of this simple, lovely bar.

Who am I? (And What am I Doing Here?) (Apologia) (TOS Review)

An apologetics/worldview curriculum for kids?  You bet – It’s by Apologia Press (a division of Apologia Educational Ministries, Inc.). and it’s fantastic

Last year we had the privilege to review the first book in the "What We Believe" series, titled Who is God? (And Can I Really Know Him?)  (You can read that review HERE.)

This year I was thrilled to find out that we’d get to review the second book in the series, titled Who Am I? (And What am I Doing Here? )

    PRODUCT DETAILS

Apologia Press has partnered with Summit Ministries to publish the "What We Believe" series.  This series focuses on the essential beliefs of the Christian faith.   It is a student-directed, Bible-based curriculum which will teach your children how to use Scripture as a lens through which to view the world around them—to see everything the way God sees it—and know the truth.  (paraphrased from the Apologia website)

As with the first book, this second book in the series is a beautiful, hard-bound visually enticing book (262 pages) targeted to ages 6-14 which contains eight lessons and retails for $39.  It is recommended that each lesson be covered for three weeks, two days per week.  Each lesson contains several key sections:

1 -The Big Idea - an introduction to the main topic of the lesson (and a review of what the student has learned so far).

2 - What You Will Do: learning objectives for the lesson.

3 - Short Story: gives your children a peek into the lives of children around your children's age with differing worldviews, and who work through the issues in the story by seeking counsel through the Bible and their parents. The story allows your children to see what holding a worldview looks like in action.

4 - Think About It: questions that reinforce the story and which encourage your children to think about the issues in the story plus allow you to check for comprehension and understanding.

5 - Words You Need To Know: vocabulary words used in the story, including their definitions, that your children can use in their notebooking exercises.

6 - Hide it in Your Heart: Two recommended memory verses:  one to reinforce the Biblical theme of the lesson, the other to focus on a related character trait.

7 - Integrated Learning: interesting articles related to the main text which will allow you and your children to connect and pursue the book's ideas/concepts in other fields of study.

8 - What Should I do?- it's not just enough to know the material in the lesson, so this section helps your child learn to apply what they've learned to their own life.

9 - Prayer: allows your family to acknowledge the attributes of God and to simply thank Him for who He is.

10 – Worldviews in Focus: The main part of each lesson focuses on a Christian worldview. This section helps children start to understand why others.

11 – What’s the Difference?:  This section helps students compare their own worldview with the worldview(s) demonstrated in the “Worldviews in Focus” section.

12 - House of Truth - a hands on memory aid, the House of Truth is a model constructed one step at a time, giving the child a concrete visual of thinking about his life within the Kingdom of God.

You can view the Table of Contents HERE.

You can view a sample chapter HERE.

Companion products for the book (which we were fortunate to also be able to review) are:

    Notebooking Journal - $24

Made in the same visually enticing format as the book, the notebooking journal contains 248 pages intended to help the student process the topics in the book.   This journal is a magnificent tool to use alongside the book, and will reinforce the student’s learning and investigation.  Included are notetaking pages, pages for writing the memory verses, prayer and praise pages, vocabulary pages, pages for drawing, and word puzzles/crosswords (always a big hit in our house – and the answers are in the back).

I had to buy another one for my other daughter.  Honestly?  I’d kind of like to have one too.  :)

See  the Lessons Plans HERE.  See a sample HERE.

    Coloring book - $8

A simple, 64-page coloring book with pictures to accompany the stories/lessons.  The pictures to color are complex enough to also hold my girls’ attention.

    See a sample HERE.

    Audio Book MP3 CD - $19

The entire book, read by Emmy winner Marissa Leinart.  We love listening to this in the car.

    Listen to a sample HERE.

    WHAT I LIKE

Biblical truth, broken down so that even the youngest student can understand it.

The lesson plans in the Notebooking Journal!

Love the prayer and praise pages in the Notebooking Journal – a fantastic way to start kids on the journey of keeping a prayer journal.

The “Find Out More” pages in the Notebooking Journal – suggestions for things  to do, books and songs to go along with each lesson.

The appealing and enticing pages and layout.  These products are truly a joy to use.

When you purchase the book, you're given the password key to a wealth of supplemental information:  teacher helps for all ten lessons, notebooking pages, info on the House of Truth model, etc.

[And all the other things I liked from the first review!]

    I WISH…

I wish the coloring book referred to the appropriate book pages. Sure, I can figure it out – but it’d be much easier to know at a glance which coloring page goes with which pages in the book.

Last year one of my wishes was to find the House of Truth model from Summit Ministries mentioned in the book.  This year it’s available, but at $125 it will have to wait.

    WATCH OUT FOR

These fit perfectly with our beliefs, but if you’re not of a Protestant faith, be warned that they are written from a Protestant point of view, with discussion on other belief systems.

While the coloring book may be laid out in a simple fashion, some of the pictures aren’t so simple and might be frustrating for very young ones.

As with my review for the first book, I’ll caution you not to feel tied to the suggested schedule.  These lessons are meaty, so go as slow as necessary and discuss as much as necessary.

While you can certainly do each book in the series separately, I highly recommend starting with the first book and progressing through the series.

Books 1 and 2 are available with all accompanying products.  Book three is available, but as of this post no accompanying products are available for order.  Book four is due sometime this year (2012).
